By Train

railway line that ran between La Serena and the town of Rivadavia within the town of Vicuna.The Branch La Serena - Rivadavia was built by the Elqui Railway Company and its line was laid in sections.The first section between La Serena and Marquise was inaugurated on August 4, 1884.In 1885 was inaugurated stretch to Vicuna and April 12 of 1886 was opened the last section which reached the town of Rivadavia.In 1888, after an outpouring of the Elqui River the railroad was destroyed.In this situation Elqui Railway Company decided to sell the branch to the State of Chile, whose transaction was completed in 1895.After this the stretch between La Serena and Islona was used by the State Railway Company to be part of the road Longitudinal North.Thus the branch La Serena - Rivadavia was included in the Northern Red Railways, allowing passengers from the south combined with service to Rivadavia.

By Bus

The city has a bus terminal, located in the center of the city the bus companies which operate daily services to Santiago, La Serena, Coquimbo, plus direct travel to the rest of the country intermediate cities like Antofagasta, Arica, Copiapo, Iquique and Valparaiso.It also has inter-buses travel to other locations as Rivadavia to the community of Paihuano, Collective with daily trips into the Elqui Valley and La Serena.

By Road

The main access to Vicuna is through the Route 41-CH and sometimes international route known as Gabriela Mistral Heritage Route between Chile and Argentina that began in the city of La Serena and ends at the border crossing at Agua Negra in communal jurisdiction.Another important land route is Antakari Heritage Route, route linking the towns of Vicuna with Rio Hurtado and Andacollo, a variant of this pathway leads to the Province Petorca in the V Region of Valparaiso.

Mamalluca observatory

The Observatory Mammalluca located to 9 km to the north of the city of Vicuna, has tourist purposes and of education.At the Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory, only daily tourist visits are possible and the telescopic observation is not possible except for specialists and astronomers.However in Mamalluca, it is possible to observe using the telescope both planets and visible stars during the starry nights of the Valle de Elqui.The observatory is near the illustrious municipality of Vicuna and to visit it you need to make an advance booking in the municipal offices of the city of Vicuna near the main square.

Gabriela Mistral Museum

is a museum Gabriela Mistral of Chile, located in the city of Vicuna in the Coquimbo Region.It has several exhibits dedicated to spreading the life and work of the Chilean poet Gabriela Mistral.The permanent exhibition has a collection of about 1,100 personal items on display the writer.There is also open to the public library consisting of about 2,000 books, most belonging to Mistral's personal collection and were donated to the municipality to create its first public library.The museum also has 2 chambers: the Chamber and the Hall Winery Good news.In the first are presented in a didactic way the main works of the poet, and the second extension activities exist.In addition, inside the museum is a replica of the birthplace of Gabriela Mistral and a park with native species such as cactus, orange, chanares and palm trees.

Mayor Fuentealba Puclaro Reservoir

The Puclaro Reservoir is located in the Elqui Valley, about 50 km east of the city of La Serena and 8 km from the city of Vicuna, Fourth Region of Coquimbo, 432 m the flood zone has 760 ha, with maximum length of 7 km.Its operation began on October 15 of 1999 and a maximum capacity of 200 million m3 of water.In the waters of Puclaro performed countless water sports as well as being home to major championships, including highlighted the II South American Championship Kitesurf and South American Open Championships pre-Bic.It is common practice in various craft navigation and categories, although in this reservoir is closed to shipping of boats with motors.

Gemini Observatory

consists of two telescopes twin optical / infrared of 8.1 meters located in both hemispheres of the Earth that are scientifically operating since 2003.It consists of international cooperation by the countries of USA, Canada, Great Britain, Brazil, France, Argentina and Chile as host country.It is administered by the Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy (AURA) under a cooperative agreement with the National Science Foundation of USA (NSF).These telescopes twins together manage to cover the whole sky in both hemispheres throughout the year achieving high image quality due to excellent weather conditions that occur when sites are located.

University of La Serena

The University of La Serena is one of 16 universities in traditional Chile, belonging to the Council of Rectors of Chilean Universities and also a member of the State Universities Consortium of Chile.Its headquarters are located in La Serena, Chile.The University of La Serena is listed as the 33rd Chilean university according to the classification webometric the CSIC, in July 2011 and in 27 th place as ranked by The Mercury.In the ranking 2011 QS World University Ranking was among the 200 best universities in Latin America.The University Corporation is the successor in the teaching of mining started in La Serena in the mid-nineteenth century.Since its inception, its primary objective has been to create permanent, promote and disseminate scientific events, technological, cultural and artistic, which is so closely linked to the commitment to be a living part in the way of finding solutions to the problem regional levels.The University of La Serena has a Head Office and six campuses located in the city of La Serena, Coquimbo and the city of Ovalle.
