How to Reach

By plane

Toyama has its own airport, from which buses run to the city center (25 min, ¥400). Toyama Airport has international flights to Shanghai, Seoul, Vladivostok, and Dalian and local service to Tokyo, Sapporo, and Fukuoka. However, flight schedules change heavily with the season so it would be worth checking out in advance what is available for when you will be traveling.

By train

From Tokyo Station, Toyama can be reached by taking the Joetsu Shinkansen to Echigo-Yuzawa and then transferring to the Hakutaka limited express train for the run to Toyama. This ride lasts about 3 1/2 hours with a good connection in Echigo-Yuzawa, and it costs ¥11900 each way. Japan Rail Pass holders have to pay ¥1450 each way for the portion of the trip between Echigo-Yuzawa and Naoetsu, which is operated by Hokuetsu Railway. The JR East Rail Pass covers the Echigo-Yuzawa - Naoetsu segment, but does not cover the portion onward to Toyama; the full fare must be paid.

By bus

Seibu runs three daily buses to Toyama from Ikebukuro and the Sunshine City Prince Hotel. It costs ¥7340 one-way and takes seven hours to make the journey.
Several companies have bus runs from Osaka and Kyoto to Toyama. West JR Bus has a morning run and an overnight run from JR Osaka station, while Hankyu has an evening run and an overnight run from Umeda. The one-way cost for these lines is roughly ¥5200 from Osaka and ¥4800 from Kyoto.

By boat

There are regular services roughly once per week to Vladivostok, Russia. Contact EURAS to arrange your tickets. Fares start from ¥25,200 ($235) one-way.

Toyama Castle

Toyama Castle also called Azumi Castle is a castle in Toyama city, Toyama Prefecture, Japan. Built in 1543, the castle and its surrounding land is maintained by the government of Japan as a public park.
In 1581, Sassa Narimasa, a retainer of Oda Nobunaga became lord of the castle. After the Honnoji Incident of 1585, there was a falling out between Sassa Narimasa and Hideyoshi, and Hideyoshi attacked the castle with 100,000 soldiers, destroying it. Maeda Toshinaga later rebuilt the castle and temporarily used it as his retirement home until much of it burned down in 1609. In 1661 Maeda Toshitsugu rebuilt the castle again and made it his home. His descendents ruled over Toyama from here until the Meiji Restoration, when it was dismantled in 1870. Post-WWII, it was rebuilt as a modern concrete structure in 1954. Nowdays, the castle remains were renovated as the Toyama Castle Park, a place to relax and it is utilized as Toyama Local History Museum, and Sato Memorial Museum, noted for its collection of utensils for Tea ceremony and antiques.

Museum of Modern Art

The Museum of Modern Art, Toyama is a prefectural museum in Toyama, Toyama.
The museum, which opened in 1981, stands within Jōnan Park in central Toyama. It displays a permanent collection and also temporary exhibitions.

The Botanic Gardens of Toyama

The Botanic Gardens of Toyama are botanical gardens located at 42 Kamikutsuwada, Fuchu-machi, Nei-gun, Toyama, Toyama, Japan. They are open daily except Thursdays; an admission fee is charged.
Garden construction began in 1989. The gardens first opened to the public in 1993, with greenhouses following in 1996 and 2000. The gardens promote research as well as education, aiming to cultivate, preserve, investigate, and research plants. To this end the gardens publish a scholarly journal, the Bulletin of the Botanic Gardens of Toyama.
Today the gardens contain about 5,000 Japanese and foreign plant species. Notable collections include plants of the Japan Sea coast and of Yunnan, China, and tropical and subtropical plants. Outdoor gardens contain a Japanese tree peony collection, plants of Yunnan, fragrant plants, flower displays, clematis, coastal plants and plants of low-altitude plains and marshes, and a forest of chestnuts and Japanese oaks, etc. Greenhouses include a tropical plant house, orchid house, tropical fruit house, Alpine plant house, and Yunnan greenhouse.

Toyama Athletic Stadium

Toyama Athletic Stadium is a multi-purpose stadium in Toyama, Japan. It is currently used mostly for football matches and athletics events. This stadium's capacity is 28,494 people.
