Medieval Castle-Tower of Homage

Existing in the Muslim period, Monturque Castle was conquered by Fernando III the Saint in the year 1240 and thereafter there were periods when the crown belonged to the nobility and others, of what is recorded in early 1273, when half Monturque tower was granted by Martin Sanchez, Commander, and his wife Dona Munia, his grandson Lope.
He was part of the estate of Aguilar since 1377, when it was delivered by Henry II of Castile to Don Gonzalo Fernandez de Cordoba, which was the connection to this family for centuries.Historical references to discover the origins of the fort are very slim, but claimed that al-Isidri hins was a fortified height or habitat. Later, in the centuries XIV and XV appears quite often associated with the name of the town at the end of Castle or Tower, so that human presence should be reduced Monturque its important castle until the late sixteenth century began to be cited as a town or place. The remains that have come to guess today allow a path consisting of three rectangular walls in each of their meetings present a tower. Specifically, it retains the most southerly corner is pentagonal.

Viewpoint of the paseillo

Within walking distance of the Plaza de la Constitution (the nerve center of town) find Calle Fray Luis de Granada, that after making an unexpected twist caused by the accident of the terrain and contours, it becomes a great balcony from you can enjoy a vast panorama of the countryside landscape, running along the ledge of a prominent hill. No wonder it has been called to this place Balcony of the World.

Archaeological site of paseillo

Next to the Mirador de los paseillo and near the Roman cisterns were discovered remains of Roman origin, corresponding to the ground floor or basement of a large public building that has been classified as a Cryptoporticus.
The floor of the structure is rectangular, 37.5 m long by 6.25 m wide, divided into two aisles by a row of central pillars made out of stones. This plant is delimited in the east and west sides by two walls of 1.15 m thick and various building systems. The eastern wall is attached, along its outer side, a series of buttresses, while the north end is carved into the rock and has a ramp. The southern enclosure is virtually demolished.

Chapel of the Santo Cristo de la Vera Cruz

At the opposite end of the parish of San Mateo, right at the beginning of the small open Moriles street and Manjón dedicated to the Father, and giving name to the street which he presides, is the chapel of the Santo Cristo de la Vera Cruz, simple church whose antiquity seems to date from the late sixteenth century, although its reconstruction in 1923 and subsequent restorations has been give a much more modern.
The rectangular, with about twenty feet long by ten wide, its facade has a simple doorway with round arch, being crowned by an ornate red-brick belfry, divided into two sections and with as many holes in each.

Parish of San Mateo

In the highest part of the population, not far from the castle and adjacent to the municipal cemetery, is located the largest and oldest religious building that currently owns the town of Monturque: the parish of San Mateo, simple church in a Gothic- Mudejar construction of which seems to correspond to the late fifteenth century or early sixteenth centuries.
On the outside we see a rebuilt front, headed by a bell divided into two bodies and two arches on each one of them, its simple main entrance, originally Gothic and ogee corrugated arch is the only entry that has the temple, through which you can access a small cancel on the roof of which rises the interior of the choir.
