How to Reach

By Air

Karlstad Airport has daily business priced flights to Stockholm and Copenhagen.Tickets are purchased from the airline Skyways.Do not go to the airport too early for the morning flights - there will be no one there, and the cafe will not open before the flight. Getting between Karlstad and the airport will set you back about SEK 250 if you take a taxi.Another way for international travellers headed for Karlstad is to fly to Oslo airport (Gardermoen) and go to Karlstad from there.

By Train

Karlstad can be reached by direct train from Gothenburg and Stockholm in Sweden and Oslo in Norway. Bookings on the SJ site.The train journey from Stockholm takes about 2.5 hours on a X2000 train (slow to spotty wifi internet free in first class, pay in 2nd class).

By Bus

A good alternative to the train are buses, with services by Swebus Express and Säfflebussen.You can also go to Karlstad directly from Stockholm's Arlanda Airport with Air-bus/Arlandalinjen.Click on "Arlanda" in the menu on top to see bus timings to and from Arlanda to Karlstad.You can also book the tickets in advance.

Karlstad Cathedral

Can be seen from miles around owing to its location on the Lagberget hill. The cathedral, which replaced an earlier one in a different location that was destroyed by fire, was built in the early eighteenth century by Christian Haller. It is constructed of natural stone and brick which is plastered over. It took around sixty years to complete the interior decorations. The church, which is in a baroque style, has some neo-classical features. It has a light interior.

Varmland Museum

Is one of the most visited museums in Sweden, attracting more than a quarter of a million people every year. It houses ten permanent exhibitions about the history of the Varmland region from prehistory right up to the present day.There is a good collection of art from the area. The museum hosts a range of temporary exhibitions.You’ll find a cafe, a restaurant and a well-stocked gift shop here.Guided tours are available.The museum lies a short walk to the north of Karlstad’s main square.

Sormon Nature Reserve

is found in a river delta area to the west of Karlstad City Centre.The topography of the area was caused by melting ice at the end of the last Ice Age ten thousand years ago. As the ice melted, the long sand bars and ridges here formed.You can walk along good lengths of sand ridge her.The pine forests that cover parts of the area support the rare sand lizard.The drinking water of Karlstad comes from this area, as the water of Lake Vanern filters naturally through layers of sand.

Karlstad City Park

The City Park of Karlstad, like many in Sweden, was laid out in the nineteenth century as the idea of these urban oases became popular.The park is well worth visiting to see its displays of flowers during the summer, when guided "flower walks" are arranged.The park is noted for its displays of rhododendrons and also grows more than forty varieties of magnolia. There are also many interesting trees and shrubs.The park is beautifully landscaped and has plenty of public seating.

Karlstad Theatre

The nearby main stage, Stora scenen, with 397 seats at Karlstad’s Theatre and will re-open its doors after a year of renovations on the 18th of April 2011.That is also the location of the main boxoffice is one of the six opera institutions of Sweden.We provide local audience as well as national and foreign guests with a wide variety of concerts, operas and musicals.
