Jinhae gunhang festival

The Jinhae Gunhang Festival, held annually since 1963, is one of the most famous cherry blossom events. The Jinhae area is an outstanding sightseeing destination in the springtime, when it is flooded with tourists who come to witness the spectacular blossom-filled streets. The origin of the Jinhae Gunhang Festival goes back to 1953, when a statue of the famous Korean Admiral Yi Sun Shin was erected at Bukwon Rotary. This marked the first annual memorial service in honor of the admiral.Today, the festival features assorted cultural, artistic, and athletic programs, providing visitors with plenty of things to see and enjoy, in addition, of course, to the cherry blossoms. The Jinhae Gunhang Festival kicks off the evening before the 2-week festival begins with a breathtaking fireworks display and a ritual in commemoration of Admiral Yi Sun-shin. Visitors will be thrilled by the sight of a parade of marchers dressed in traditional military uniforms carrying huge banners and pulling large carts, performances of traditional Korean instruments and nongangnori (Korean traditional folk music, which farmers play and enjoy with their neighbors).

Korea Naval Academy Museum

is located in the premises of the Naval Academy, located adjacent to the Jinhae Naval Base. The museum was renamed as the Naval Academy Museum in January 1976, expanding the existing exhibition center of Admiral Yi Soon-shin's relics. The museum has three separate exhibition rooms and a souvenir shop. The museum houses over 4,800 relics, including three treasures.Korea's shipbuilding technology has greatly developed over time.Iron rods strengthened the structure of ships while charging tactics became quite common during battles. The Turtle Ship was a newly created sea tank originated from spear ships and firearms and a wood board covered warship. The front part of the ship was shaped as a dragon head, where the mouth served as a gun port. Two additional gun ports opened on the top and bottom of the head. The rear was shaped as a tail with a gun port placed underneath. There were six gun ports on both sides of the back plate.Hyeon and Hwang shot large fire arrows and are estimated to have had a shooting range of 300 meters.Seung shot fire arrows dipped in gun powder and was used to attack nearby ships.Seung was light in weight with a range of up to 200 meters. Most enemy ships attacked by these cannons were badly damaged or burnt and sank during naval battles.

Jinhae’s Naval Port Festival

Korea’s biggest spring flower festival of them all is nearly upon us From April 1st through the 10th, the charming town of Jinhae on Korea’s southern coast will welcome an estimate 2.5 million people to its 49th annual Jinhae Naval Port Festival to view its thousands upon thousands of cherry trees.Festival organizers have put together helpful information in English for the event. To reach Jinhae from Seoul or Busan, you can travel via bus or train. While Korea’s express buses are typically fast and comfortable, note that the roads will be very congested around Jinhae. With that in mind, to help you plan your trip, I’ve put together some train schedules to and from Jinhae from Seoul and points northwest and from Busan and points southeast.there is no direct train service between Seoul and Jinhae. You’ll need to transfer at either DongDaegu or Miryang station. From there, some trains will go to Jinhae, while others will stop at nearby Masan. If yours stops in Masan, you’ll need to take a taxi or bus to Jinhae (taxis will run you something in the neighborhood of 12,000 won and take about 30 minutes).Depending on your combination of trains, a standard fare, one-way trip will cost between 48,900 to 52,000 won (about $45) between Seoul and Jinhae.Travel times via train will be about 3.5~4.0 hours.

Junam Reservoir

is an important bird migration site and the largest in Korea.During the peak winter season, an average of 30,000 to 40,000 birds a day can be seen there. There is a birdwatching festival there each year. The water level is kept constant throughout the year and the water surface does not freeze over in winter. There is also an abundance of great duckweed and hornwort that provides a natural, relaxing setting. Junam Reservoir is a well-known destination in Changwon and gives you the chance to experience the exciting wildlife and breathtaking nature of Korea.Every November, these birds fly into the reservoir to spend a winter where there is warmth and abundance of food, joining the living national treasures of the swan, white-naped crane, and the Eurasian spoonbill. The sheer size and makeup of the reservoir provides ideal living conditions for the birds as well as numerous photo opportunities.Take the local bus at Changwon Train Station.Get off at the entrance of the Junam Reservoir and walk 10 minutes from the entrance.
