How to Reach

By Air

Cephalonia has one airport, Kefalonia Island International Airport, with a runway around 2.4 km.in length, located about 10 km south of Argostoli.Almost every scheduled flight is an Olympic route, flying mainly to and from Athens, although there is an Ionian Island Hopper service 3 times a week calling at Cephalonia, Zante and Lefkas.In summer the airport handles a number of charter flights from all over Europe.

By Road

The first larger roads were built by the English in the 19th century.In the 20th century asphalted roads were built, and since 1995 almost all streets connecting villages and beaches are covered with asphalt.since ca.2000 the Lixouri bypass was built and a four lane street south of Argostoli was constructed.Greek National Road 50, commonly Argostoli-Sami Road, Argostoli-Poros Road, Argostoli-Fiskardo Road (with link to Lixouri) and Road linking Poros and Sami.

Mount Ainos

is the tallest mountain in the Ioanian island of Cephallonia, Greece, with an elevation of 1,628 metres.Most of the mountain range is designated as a park area and is covered with Greek fir and black pine.Pine forests are found between the elevations of 700 to 1200 m.No ski resorts are found on this mountain range, but there are beautiful caves to be seen in the north.A highway passes over the mountain range connecting traffic from southwestern to the eastern part of the island is one of the few roads going into the mountain range.Approximately 3,000 to 4,000 people live on the slopes of Ainos.Multiple television and cell phone relay towers occupy the summit.

Myrtos Beach

is situated in the region of Pylaros, in the north-west of Kefalonia, Greece.The beach is situated between the feet of two mountains, Agia Dynati and Kalon Oros (901m).A well-made steep winding road, about two km in length and with hairpin bends, leads down to the beach from the village of Divarata.There is a single beach bar serving drinks and light snacks.There are several Tavernas at the top of the road which leads down to the beach in the village of Divarata, and many people choose to eat here, having spent time on the beach.Others choose to drive further and eat at Assos.At the end of the road, car parking is located immediately at the base of the cliffs at the edge of the beach.Modernization is ongoing and a system is developing where people arriving turn right onto a new track at the end of the road, leading down to the beach.Once on the beach, to leave, people turn left and come back up an older track.

Limnospilaio Melissani

The precipitous limnospilaio Melissani located 2 km northwest of Sami in Kefalonia.The natural entrance of the cave is vertical dimensions 40 x 50 meters and was created by the collapse of a section of the roof.Artificial entrance with stairs and long underground walkway allows a visit to the cave.The lake is located 20 m below the surface and depth of the water ranges from 10 m to 30 m Stalactites with odd shapes adorn most of the cave.

Nautical Museum of Fiscardo

The Nautical and Environmental Museum of Fiscardo is run by the Fiscardo's Nautical and Environmental Club (FNEC), a non-profit organization.Although FNEC as an organization doesn't work anymore, the project has been handled by Fiscardo Divers and it is being continued with much enthusiasm.This museum was formed with the help of volunteers from around the world and with the collaboration of the Ionian Research Centre.Its aim is to develop the sensitivity of the people towards the nautical environment and to promote actions on the environmental protection.The entrance to the museum is free, although visitors usually make contributions to help the voluntary work of of the team.The museum is housed in the former primary school of Fiscardo, which was repaired and renovated for this purpose.The exhibits include pictures of monk seals, caretta caretta turtles, whales, invertebrates, insects and plankton of the area.The museum has also created a radio station that broadcasts regionally and informs people on environmental issues.

Korgialenio Historical and Folk Art Museum

is situated in the center of Argostoli.It was established in 1962 by Eleni Kembitsi-Kosmetatou in an area of 300 sq.m and it’s one of the most impressive museums of Greece.The Museum exhibits the local costumes, furniture and embroidery of Kefalonia.Other exhibits include heirlooms and other ecclesiastic items, pictures, paintings, maps, manuscripts, coins, jewels, silver and metal craftworks and much more.In the museum's basement, the Historical Archives of Kefalonia display historical manuscripts from the 16th-19th centuries, depicting several historical periods and an important collection of more than 3000 photos.
