St. Martin's Collegiate Church

The St. Martin was to build the St. Joseph Church in 1868 the only Aalst parish.Originally the church had become much bigger but by religious turmoil and lack of funds, construction was halted.The Gothic tower on the side of the Market was planned, would have reached out higher than any other cathedral in Belgium.The church contains many artworks, including a Cross of Joseph Meganck and also a painting of Saint Martin, the patron saint of Aalst, which gives his cloak to a beggar.Furthermore there is also a beautiful baroque painting of the famous painter Rubens titled The Plague Sufferers.Currently undergoing a renovation of St. Martin by the Flemish Government and the City Council founded Aalst.

Aalst Carnival

is an annual event in the Belgian town of Aalst. It is always celebrated on the days before Ash Wednesday.The Aalst carnival originated in the Middle Ages.Cavalcades from 1851 were not yet organized by the city council.Only since 1923 has one of the celebrations.From then organized the board of the city of Aalst the entire event.Aalst Carnival is primarily a street event: the revelers dancing in the squares and draw from one pub to another.Since 2010, the Aalst carnival included in the List of Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity by the UNESCO.Aalst carnival starts on Sunday and ends on Shrove Tuesday.

Aalst City Park

The City Park is a park in the Belgian town of AalSt. It can be seen as artificial nature reserve with a recreational-educational function.The park covers an area of approximately 15 hectares.The park is located south of downtown.It is bordered by the Avenue du Parc, The Wolfstraat and Erembodegem Street.It is set between the urban sports and industrial zone on the Dender.In the south runs the park in the nature Osbroek.The park of Aalst was built between 1911 and 1916 under the impetus of ships Desire De Wolf.The park is conceived as a spacious recreational center with walking trails and playgrounds around two ponds: the Balloon Pond and Mirror Pond.The original structures in the park (a milk house, a house of cards, a gazebo and a bridge) breath the typical atmosphere of the early 20th century.The park can partly be seen as an arboretum (the inventory includes more than 100 different species).

Belfry of Aalst

The Schepenhuis (Aldermen's House) of Aalst, Belgium, is a former city hall, one of the oldest in the Low Countries.Dating originally from 1225, it was partially rebuilt twice as a result of fire damage, first after a 1380 war and again after a fireworks accident in 1879.The belfry tower at one corner of the building was completed in 1460, and in the next year was equipped with a carillon built by master craftsmen from Mechelen.The current carillon, the sixth installed since the original, has 52 bells.Inscribed on the tower are the Latin words "not with hope, not with fear".This was the motto of Spain's Philip II, whose domain expanded into the Low Countries in 1555.A small wing of late Gothic style, facing the market square and adorned with five life-size statues, was added in the 16th century.From this annex one can access the cellars, which originally served as torture chambers.
