Petrolina Airport (IATA: PNZ, ICAO: SBPL) is the airport serving Petrolina, Pernambuco and Juazeiro, Bahia, Brazil.It is named after the Petrolina-born Senator Nilo de Sousa Coelho (1920-1983).Petrolina Airport handles the exportation of fresh fruits from the Sao Francisco valley to Europe and the USA.The cargo terminal operates with 6 large coolers with capacity for 17,000 boxes each plus 2 coolers tunnels.This airport also has daily direct connections between the region which includes 53 municipalities from the states of Pernambuco, Piaui and Bahia to major centers such as Recife, Salvador da Bahia and Sao Paulo.The airport is located 9 km from downtown Petrolina.

Carnaval in Pernambuco

The four-day period before Lent leading up to Ash Wednesday is carnival time in Brazil.Rich and poor alike forget their cares as they party in the streets.Pernambuco has large Carnaval celebrations including the frevo typical Pernambuco music.Another famous carnaval music style from Pernambuco is maracatu.The cities of Recife and Olinda hold the most authentic and democratic carnaval celebrations in Brazil.The largest carnaval parade in all of Brazil is Galo da Madrugada, which takes place in downtown Recife in the Saturday of carnaval.Another famous event is the Noite dos Tambores Silenciosos.Recife’s joyous Carnaval is nationally known and admired attracting thousands of people every year.The party starts a week before the official date with electric trios “shaking” the Boa Viagem district.One of the highlights is Saturday when more than one million people follow the Galo da Madrugada group.From Sunday to Monday there is the Night of the Silent Drums, on the Patio do Terco where Maracatus honor slaves that died in prisons.

Saint John's Day

Saint John's Day is celebrated throughout Pernambuco.Nonetheless, the festivities in Caruaru are by far the largest in the state.Saint John's festivals in Gravata and Carpina are also very popular.Festa Junina was introduced to Northeastern Brazil by the Portuguese for whom Saint John's day (also celebrated as Midsummer Day in several European countries) on 24 June, is one of the oldest and most popular celebrations of the year.Differently of course from what happens on the European Midsummer Day, the festivities in Brazil do not take place during the summer solstice, but during the tropical winter solstice.The festivities traditionally begin after the 12 June on the eve of Saint Anthony's day and last until the 29th which is Saint Peter's day.During these fifteen days there are bonfires, fireworks and folk dancing in the streets.Once exclusively a rural festival today in Brazil, it is largely a city festival during which people joyfully and theatrically mimic peasant stereotypes and cliches in a spirit of jokes and good times.Typical refreshments and dishes are served, including canjica and pamonha.

Winter Festival

In the hilly areas of the interior – mainly in areas with a micro-climate of altitude temperatures that can reach 8 °C in the winter.Every winter, when the weather is milder, tourists from neighboring states and other parts of Pernambuco visit cities such as Garanhuns, Gravata, Triunfo and Taquaritinga do Norte.The city of Garanhuns holds an annual Winter Festival, in the month of July.The main attractions are concerts, dances, rural tourism, culinary and the relatively low temperatures for a tropical climate.

Boa Viagem Beach

Probably one of the world's best urban beaches with pristine white sands.With 8km of hotels and restaurants, it is the longest urbanized stretch of beach in Brazil.If you want a tan, you came to the right place.The beach road has a wide walkway attached and this is dotted with huts selling food and drink.Try the traditional "agua de coco" (coconut water).The beach itself is full of vendors selling food and drink.There are also vendors selling t-shirts, hats, suncream, sunglasses.These guys can get a bit insistent.Simply smile and one word will have them on their way.The beach is somewhat protected by a coral reef wall visible at low tide, making it good for a swim but don't go out past the wall, as the waters are more dangerous, with sharks reported in the area.

Santa Isabel Theater

is located in the Brazilian city of Recife, capital of Pernambuco state.It was inaugurated on 18 May 1850, and sits 850 in the audience.Important artistic and political figures passed through the theater in the nineteenth centrury, including Castro Alves, Joaquim Nabuco and Emperor Pedro II of Brazil.The theater is located in Republic Square (Praca da Republica) in the district of Santo Antonio.It is adjacent to the Princesses Field Palace (residency of Pernambuco state governors) and the Pernambuco Justice Palace.The theater houses the Recife Symphony Orchestra.

Backwoods Museum

is maintained by the city of Petrolina, was installed Oct. 27, 1973 and officially established in November 21, 1985.After remodeled and expanded, with reopening in May 1996, the Museum moved into an area of 1,045 square meters.Its collection consists of more than three thousand objects gathered in collections where the environment, indigenous culture, handicrafts, rural housing, the values of economy, politics, religion, society as a whole hinterland are presented in Mounting a very definite museographic and museum.A pleasant stroll through the brands of the past, present in figures belongings as Lantern - the king of the highwaymen, Don Malan - the first bishop of Petrolina, Colonel Quel - patriarch of the family rabbit, Johnny's Pharol - pioneer of the interior of the press Northeast and many others.A meeting also with the permanent exhibitions sectored according to themes: Hall of Gargoyles, Northeast House, San Francisco River, Northeastern Cangaco and Icons.In each space a new detail catches the eye of the visitor, enabling comprehension and understanding of the socio-cultural and economic crises over time in the life of earth and man of the backlands.
