How to Reach

By Air

Nearby airports providing scheduled flights are Milano Malpensa, Milano Linate, Lugano Agno (in Switzerland) and Orio al Serio Airport near Bergamo. Milano Malpensa can be reached in about one hour by car; about two hours by train to Stazione Centrale (Milano Central) and then direct shuttle coach or about an hour and a half by train (interchange in Saronno); Milano Linate can be reached by car in about an hour, or by train to Stazione Centrale and then local tram.Bergamo's Orio al Serio Airport can be reached in about an hour and a quarter by car; in two hours by train to Milano Central and then half-hourly shuttle coach.Lugano Agno can be reached by car in less than an hour or by train in an hour and a half (changing once and walking) but it only offers direct flights to Switzerland and Italy and generally higher-priced business class or private charter.Trains from Como to Zurich Airport take three to five hours.Como also has its own aeroplane club with a fleet of sea planes, limited to flight training and local tour flights.

By Train

The Servizio Ferroviario Regionale (Regional Railway Service) connects Como by train to other major cities in Lombardy. Services are provided by Trenitalia and LeNORD through two main stations: Como San Giovanni (Trenitalia) and Como Lago (LeNORD). There is another urban station served by Trenitalia (Albate) and three more urban stations served by LeNORD (Como Borghi-Universita, Como Camerlata and Grandate Breccia).Como San Giovanni is also a stop on the main North-South line between Milan Centrale and Zurich and Basel. Intercity and Eurostar trains stop at this station, which makes Como very accessible from the European express train network. Tickets can be purchased online from Rail Europe.A funicular railway connects the center of Como with Brunate, a small village (1,800 inhabitants) on a mountain at 715 m (2,346 ft) above sea level.

By Bus

The local public transport network counts 11 urban (within city limits) lines and 'extra-urban' (crossing city limits) (C) lines connecting Como with most of its province centers.They are provided by ASF Autolinee.Ferrovie Nord Milano also provides other bus lines connecting Como to Varese in substitution of the original railway line that was dismissed in the 1960s.A taxi service is provided by the Municipality of Como.

By Ferry

The boats and hydrofoils (aliscafi) of Navigazione Lago di Como connect the town with most of the villages sitting on the shores of the lake.

Tempio Voltiano

is a museum dedicated to Alessandro Volta situated in the city of Como, Italy.The neoclassical building was completed in 1927 to celebrate the 100th death anniversary of the scientist, but it was inaugurated only in 1928.It hosts a collection of scientific instruments used by the physicist and, on the first floor, personal belongings and various awards received by the scientist.It is one of the most visited museums in town and, until the Italian lira was replaced by the Euro, the temple was featured on the back of the 10,000 lire banknote while Volta's portrait was depicted on the front of the same banknote.

Educational Silk Museum

The Educational Silk Museum treasures, collects and displays machines, objects, documents, samples and instruments witnessing the glorious past of the textile industry that still nowadays rewards Como as the “City of Silk”.Moreover, its technical and artistic heritage is arranged in an easily accessible building.The love and passion for silk have ancient origins and have also been consolidated by the local Camera di Commercio, Provincia and Comune di Como since 1866 through the organisation of professional courses for textile operators.The Museum extends over a surface of 1000 square metres and its exhibits reconstruct the silk manufacturing process with an historical and educational approach.Moreover, the visitor is given the opportunity to learn more about both the whole process and the single phases that make it up. In some cases, the dimensions of the rooms make the exposition of cumbersome machines feasible.The machines were donated to the Museum and all restoration work was carried out by keeping the original mechanisms.

Baradello castle

The castle stands on the hill Baradello (430 m above sea level ) overlooking the city of Como, closing on the south-west valleys.From the hill you can enjoy a breathtaking view: the view extends 360 degrees from the lake to the city, from the peaks of the Alps to the Po valley to the Apennine mountains : its massive tower with a square base is clearly visible to those who arrive in Como.The etymological origin of the name is due to the Indo-European root Baradello bar means high place.The best preserved structure of the complex is the rectangular Romanesque, whose base measures 8.20 m xm 8.35.The lower part, 19.50 meters high, is built upon the foundations on the rock and was once adorned with battlements type Guelph, the upper part, more recently, 8 m high, with crenellated battlements of ancient type Ghibellines.The overall height of the tower was 28 meters.Grandeur of ancient date, only lacking the battlements.

History Museum Giuseppe Garibaldi

located in Piazza Gold Medals 1 was opened in 1932.It is dedicated to Garibaldi, the hero of your stay in memory after the Battle of San Fermo.The museum preserves the testimony of 29 Garibaldi born in the Province of Como who participated in the first shipment of volunteers, sailed on the evening of 5 May 1860 from the rock of the Fourth.

Social Theatre

is the opera of Como.Hosted Niccolo Paganini, Franz Liszt and Giuditta Pasta.The first time the theater housed a painting of flowers, representing the coronation of the poet Vittorio Alfieri, surrounded by Bacchae, chandeliers and garlands, and this was later replaced in 1855 with a painting of Pagliano, a project of Spelluzzi.The Sanquirico for the inauguration of 1813 created a large curtain, which depicts the death of Como, Pliny the Elder during the eruption of Vesuvius of 79 AD which was restored in 2008 - 09 and exhibited in Turin on the occasion of the celebrations for 150 years national unity.The building houses a vast 'reduced' where he also hosts the Casino Society 1821, where stands the White Room in 1905 - 08 fully renovated by the great sculptor and painter from Lombardy Pogliaghi Ludwig (who worked, as he often happened, with the architect Como Federico Frigerio ).

Cressoni Theatre

is a historic theater in Como, later transformed into a cinema and is currently closed.The opening of Cressoni Theatre (originally called simply The New Theatre) took place on 30 December 1870 with the performance of the play The outlawed but the official inauguration took place on the evening of 4 March 1871, with the troubadour.Under the direction of maestro Eugene Tagliabue Despuez Agnes sang Rosina Florentines, Marianna De Stars Mazzoni, Louise De Fanti, James Artoni, Nicholas Azzalini.Since then about ninety were staged opera performances.The most represented was precisely Il Trovatore, followed by the Barber of Seville, Un Ballo in Maschera, Ernani, Rigoletto, Crispin and Gossip (the brothers Ricci ), Linda di Chamounix, La Sonnambula, Lucia di Lammermoor.The most important events in the history of the theater were certainly Cressoni Lucia di Lammermoor and The Barber of Seville in 1901, which saw starring Luisa Tetrazzini, and the last opera performance was a Carmen starring Mary Passeri, in 1907.
