How to Reach

By Air

The Airport of Chios is located 3 km outside Chios city and 5 kilometers from the resort of Karfas beach.The runway has a length of 1500 m.and the airport has Passport, Customs and Meteorology offices.Up to 4 aeroplanes (Boeing 737 sized) can be served at the same time.

By Ferry

There are daily ships available from Piraeus to Chios and from Chios to Piraeus all year round.Depending on the boat you take the trip takes approximately 4-8 hours and costs 20-40 Euro.The line is served by NEL Lines and some days also by CAN Ferries.From Chios you have also connection to Lesvos, Limnos and Northern Greece, ie Thessalonica, Kavala and Alexandropolis and the Cyclades (Tino, Siro, Mykono).

Castle of Chios

The castle of Chios consists of an inhabited area surrounded by a large stonewall structure with various fortifications purposed to defend the enclosed population and properties against naval attack and siege.The castle of Chios is situated adjacent to the main port of Chios and it's east side borders with the sea.The castle of Chios was constructed in the medieval period with its first construction phase having started in the 10th century by the Byzantines.The structures surviving to this day are part of later construction and expansion dated to the time when the Genoese, who maintained commercial concerns, ruled the island during the 14th to the 16th century.

Archaeological Museum of Chios

The Archaeological Museum of Chios is a museum located on Michalon Street in Chios town, Chios, Greece.It was constructed in 1966-1971 and covers a total area of 2500 square metres.1200 square metres of floor space is occupied by the exhibitions.The museum underwent renovation in 1998 and reopened in November 1999 and features a collection of antiquities from the Neolithic Era up to the Roman times excavated at the ancient sites of Emporio, Fana, Dotia, Aghio Galas and at Chios town.Many of the artifacts unearthed at the sites were dug by the British School of Archaeology.

Fortress of Apolihni

The fortress of Apolihni is located in the northwest of Armolia, constructed in 1440 by the Genoese Nicholas Banca Giustiniani.This is confirmed by the Latin inscription that was on the architrave above the entrance to the fortress which multitudinous travelers read all year round.The inscription is now preserved in the old village school on the northern side of the Cathedral of St.Demetrios and the Virgin of Armolia.Because it had been whitewashed, it is only possible to identify the Giustiniani armorial bearings, an encircled tower on the left side and a encircled cross on the right side.

Chios Byzantine Museum

The Chios Byzantine Museum is a museum in Chios, Greece.The Byzantine Museum in Chios is contained within the 19th Century Ottoman mosque which is located in the central town square.This museum has been in operation since 1980 and contains items that were donated from collections as well as findings discovered in local excavations.The dates of the items on display range from the Early Christian period to the post-Byzantine period (5th-18th century).The museum is comprised of a timber-roofed porch, a large basement and a main room.Currently,the mosque porch and the courtyard are only open to the public.The remaining portion is still under renovation.The courtyard displays stone objects discovered during excavations as well as tombstones from Muslim and Jewish graves.

Koraes Library

Chios counts with one of the largest libraries in Greece, the "Adamantios Koraes" Library.Established in 1792 as a department of the Great Chian School, today it stores a significant collection of over 130,000 volumes.Today the Adamantios Koraes library reports to the Libraries Department of the Ministry of Education and Religious Affairs.It also publishes a comprehensive catalogue and archives of the Library's book collections, has a lending department, and it has a mobile library van for the villages of Chios.During the last years, it has been working on the modernization of its storage and access systems to ensure the usefulness and efficiency of the Library both with users, visitors and researchers.
