By Air

Balikpapan has the largest airport on the Indonesian side of Borneo, the Sepinggan International Airport.It is also the busiest airport in Kalimantan and permits large aircraft.Airlines currently using the airport are Lion Air, Merpati Nusantara Airlines, Batavia Air, Trigana Air, Kartika Airlines and Sriwijaya Air (domestic routes) and Air Asia, Garuda Indonesia, Mandala Airlines and Silk Air (international routes).The airport is one of the nine principal locations in Indonesia used by Muslims on their pilgrimage to Mecca the Hajj.From 1996 to 1997, the airport served over 4,500 East Kalimantan pilgrims and from 1997 to 1998, it served pilgrims from East Kalimantan, South Kalimantan, Central Sulawesi and North Sulawesi.

By Ferry

Taking the ferry is an alternative for traveling to other coastal areas in East Kalimantan, such as Penajam.In addition to the airport, Balikpapan also has a seaport called Semayang.It serves commercial boats to many destinations in Indonesia, such as Surabaya, Makassar, Jakarta, Pare Pare and Manado.In the 1990s, transportation using ships was very popular.Today due to more affordable and efficient airplane travel more people choose to fly.

By Bus

Public transportation in Balikpapan consists of small minibus named angkutan kota or angkot for short.Locals often call angkot as taxi and metered taxi as taxi argo.There's no public bus inside the city. Minibuses serves public transport between points.Although there're dedicated routes, they often deroute due to passenger's request.They also sometimes don't serve the whole route.

By Car

Balikpapan can be accessed from Samarinda, Bontang And Banjarmasin by land through 2 bus terminal From Samarinda, Bontang by Terminal Batu Ampar and From Banjarmasin from the other terminal in the Batu Ampar District.

Mahavihara Manggala Buddha
