How to Reach

By Air

Until 2005 Augsburg was served by nearby Augsburg Airport (AGB).In that year all air passenger transport has been relocated to Munich Airport.Since then the Airport only serves for General aviation and business aviation.

By Train

Augsburg has seven stations. The Hauptbahnhof (main station) built from 1843 to 1846 is Germany’s oldest main station in a large city still providing services in the original building. It is currently being modernized and an underground tram station is built underneath it.Hauptbahnhof is on the Munich–Augsburg and Ulm–Augsburg lines and is connected by ICE and IC services to Munich, Berlin, Dortmund, Frankfurt, Hamburg and Stuttgart. As of December 2007, the French TGV connected Augsburg with a direct High Speed Connection to Paris. In addition EC and night train services connect to Amsterdam, Paris and Vienna and connections will be substantially improved by the creation of the planned Magistrale for Europe.

By Trambus

The tram network is now 35.5 km-long after the opening of new lines to the university in 1996, the northern city boundary in 2001 and to the Klinikum Augsburg (Augsburg hospital) in 2002.Tram line 6, which runs 5.2 km from Friedberg West to Rotes Tor, opened in December 2010.Public transport is very well catered for.It is controlled by the Augsburger Verkehrsverbund (Augsburg transport union, AVV) extended over central Swabia. There are seven rail Regionalbahn lines, five tram lines, 27 city bus lines and six night bus lines, as well as, several taxi companies.

By Road

The main road link is autobahn A 8 between Munich and Stuttgart.

Fuggerei

is the world's oldest social housing complex still in use.It is a walled enclave within the city of Augsburg, Bavaria. It takes it name from the Fugger family and was founded in 1516 by Jacob Fugger the Younger (known as "Jacob Fugger the Rich") as a place where the needy citizens of Augsburg could be housed. By 1523, 52 houses had been built, and in the coming years the area expanded with various streets, small squares and a church. The gates were locked at night, so the Fuggerei was, in its own right, very similar to a small independent medieval town.It is still inhabited today, affording it the status of being the oldest social housing project in the world.

Cathedral of Augsburg

is a church in Augsburg, Bavaria, Germany, founded in the 11th century in Romanesque style, but with 14th century Gothic additions.Together with the Basilica of St. Ulrich and Afra, it is one of the city's main attractions. It measures 113 x 40 m, and its towers are 62 m high.It is dedicated to the Virgin Mary. The cathedral is perhaps located on the site of a pre-existing 4th century building, not necessarily a church, whose foundations have been excavated beneath the current level; the site is included within the ancient Roman walls of Augusta Vindelicorum. The first known church in the place is documented from 822, but dating to the late 8th century reigns of bishops Wikterp and Simpert.

Augsburger puppet theatre

It is located at the former Heilig-Geist-Spital in the historic center of Augsburg. Since 1948, the "Augsburger Puppenkiste" had been producing theatrical adaptations of fairy tales and serious pieces. In 1953, it began producing television series and gained nation-wide prominence with productions, such as Jim Knopf und Lukas der Lokomotivfuhrer and Urmel aus dem Eis.Since 2003 the puppet theatre has toured through German paediatric clinics, performing "The little kangaroo and the scaredy-hare" in hopes of encouraging sick children. From April 29 to May 7, 2006 the play was also performed three times a day by the Puppenkiste in Augsburg's twin city Amagasaki in Japan. In 2006 another tour was launched that was aimed specifically at kindergartens. By watching Peter Schneerbaum's play "Paula and the elfs from the box" children are supposed to learn how to deal with their emotions. In the context of project "Papilio" of the Beta-Institute the play was created using scientific knowledge. The Papilio tour started at the Bayerischer Landtag in Munich March 7, 2006.

Eiskanal

is an artificial canal feature in the city of Augsburg, Germany that was constructed as the canoe slalom venue for the 1972 Summer Olympics that were hosted in Munich. The first artificial whitewater course of its kind, it has served as a prototype for numerous artificial courses since constructed, such as the Parc Olímpic del Segre course in La Seu d'Urgell, Spain, built for the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona; the Dickerson Whitewater Course, a U.S. training facility for the 1992 Olympic Games; the Penrith Whitewater Stadium in Sydney, Australia, built for the 2000 Olympic Games; in Prague, The Czech Republic; in Bratislava, Slovakia; in Athens, Greece, built for the 2004 Olympic Games; and most recently in Charlotte, North Carolina. It hosted the ICF Canoe Slalom World Championships in 1985 and 2003.The Eiskanal is still considered a world-class venue, and hosts many World Cup and other international races.

Dorint Hotel Tower

is the best-known high-rise building in the German city of Augsburg and visible throughout the city.At 107,2 m (158 m with the antenna) it is the highest building in the Augsburg area and among the ten highest in Bavaria. It is located at the intersection of Gogginger Strabe and Imhofstrabe, in the borough of Goggingen. In its vicinity are the Congress Hall and Wittelsbacher Park. The building is architecturally similar to the Marina City towers in Chicago. The tower is nicknamed "Maiskolben" (corncob) by locals because of its cylindrical shape with numerous bulges.

Botanical garden

is a well-tended area displaying a wide range of plants labelled with their botanical names. It may contain specialist plant collections such as cacti and succulent plants, herb gardens, plants from particular parts of the world, and so on; there may be greenhouses, shadehouses, again with special collections such as tropical plants, alpine plants or other exotic plants. Visitor services at a botanical garden might include tours, educational displays, art exhibitions, book rooms, open-air theatrical and musical performances and other entertainment.Botanical gardens are often run by universities or other scientific research organizations and often have associated herbaria and research programmes in plant taxonomy or some other aspect of botanical science. In principle their role is to maintain documented collections of living plants for the purposes of scientific research, conservation, display and education, although this will depend on the resources available and the special interests pursued at each particular garden.

St. Ulrich's & St. Afra's Abbey Church

is a former Benedictine abbey dedicated to Saint Ulrich and Saint Afra in the south of the old city in Augsburg, Bavaria. The Benedictine monastery was preceded by an original foundation established at an uncertain date, but at least as early as the 10th century (and in its turn quite possibly a refoundation of a still earlier one from the 5th or 6th centuries), by the "Kollegiatstift St. Afra", a community of the priests charged with the care of St Afra's Church (now the Basilica of Saints Ulrich and Afra), where the relics of Saint Afra were venerated, and next door to which the community premises were built.
