Kouri forest

The Kouri forest, about 2 km from the town of Almyros, encompasses coastal wetlands, brackish marshland and over 10 km2 of lowland oak forest. The forest provides a home to deer, roe deer and other small fauna, while the area is important to migratory birds such as the mute swan, spoonbill, glossy ibis and various herons. There are footpaths as well as a miniature train for a brief tour through the woods and over small bridges.

Mount Othrys

is a mountain in Central Greece in the northeastern part of Phthiotis and southern part of Magnesia. The mountaintop is at the prefectural and the regional border at 1,728 m.Much of the area is unpopulated in the northern part and the southwestern part.Anavra is the exception making it one of the few communities in southwestern Magnesia. The length from west to east is about 15 to 20 km and the width from north to south is about 10 to 15 km.It is located NE of Lamia, SE of Domokos and SSW of the Volos area.Much of the mountain is rocky.Forests are also in the mountain range and surround the mountain. The main source of rock is ophiolite.

Agios Dimitrios Church

The church of Agios Dimitrios in Almyros City. This church was rebuilt after a catastrophically earthquake which destroyed the whole town in 1980.We can trace the history of contemporary Almyros back to ancient Alos home of Achilles, near the site Kefalosi (about 10 km south of Almyros).Alos was a very important and populous town famous for its port and for its part in the Persian Wars. After Byzantine time, especially because of the pirate raids they built the town in the position that it is today.Further on after the WWII the town has started its development. In 1980 as I told you, an earthquake destroyed the whole town.In addition, Almyros composes an important agricultural and commercial center of Magnisia and also it is has started to be developed as a tourist center for the area.In the Museum you can admire the findings from the Neolithic period. At the opposite side you can visit the old High School, which is a monumental classic building from the begging of 20th century which alongside the Museum are the oldest monumental building of the area.
